FIR really started out in the mind of Ian, a producer who’s been working with
popular Taiwanese acts like SHE and Jay Chow for over ten years. Two years ago,
Ian felt he needed a break from his usual work. He felt that he wanted to do
something different. Thus, the beginnings of FIR began in Ian’s thoughts.
Technically started in May 2002, FIR really hit the Taiwanese music scene
in the spring of 2004 with their hit single, Fly Away.
All I could say when I heard of FIR was, WELL IT’S ABOUT TIME. The Taiwanese
group FIR was an instant hit with their first single, Fly Away. Taking influence
from the popular Jpop/rock female fronted trios, these guys have been compared
again and again to Japan’s The Brilliant Green, Every Little Thing, and Do As
Infinity. After the release of Fly Away, FIR practically went right
away from unheard of to huge hit almost overnight. Members are Faye on vocals,
Real on guitar, and Ian as producer.
Seriously, I don’t know why no one else had made the move to start a pop/rock
trio earlier in the Chinese music scene. With groups like DAI and ELT so
popular in Taiwan and China, it beats me as to why no one realized it was a
good move earlier. Nevertheless, the Chinese speaking faction of Asia has been
craving for a rock voice of its own for quite some time, ever since DAI and
the Brilliant Green became hits. Naturally, when one finally did emerge into
the major scene, everyone who had been waiting for such a moment embraced it
with open arms. (at least that’s what happened in my point of view) Not to
mention, but FIR is a very good group as Chinese/Taiwanese music goes.
I am also overjoyed that their lyrics have meaning, and are not the usual
Mandarin fare of random things and unrequited love.
FIR isn’t all that much of a DAI or ELT rip-off, though. Even though they have
their similar points (the whole female fronted pop/rock trio thing being the
biggest similarity) FIR still has a refreshing sound. Faye’s voice works well
with both loud and soft pieces, making practically every song they create
sound as good as their best. Real does well on the guitar, working interesting
melodies into the instrumentation. It seems that most of FIR’s music focuses
on Faye’s vocals or other instruments. Ian, being the producer, is probably
the one writing the music.
Though FIR’s just started out in their career, they’ve been an instant hit.
Producer Ian says that he is going to try to keep everything together through
thick and thin, so we can hope to see lots more FIR releases in the future.
