Formed in 1999, Psycho le Cemu (originally known as MYU) soon established itself as a truly
one-of-a-kind visual kei group. Dressing up in costumes not much different from the likes of
anime and videogame cosplay, these guys are hard to miss. Seriously, you have to be blind
(no offense if you are though) not to notice Aya’s neon pink hair or Seek’s indescribably
crazy costumes. At first they may seem way too weird, but once you get over that, you start
to realize how these guys truly rock. However, they don’t only dress up, but they also dance
during performances and promotional videos!
Aya and Yura-sama often abandon their instruments
during live performances to lead the audience in a little para para (a dance in which the
audience copies the arm movements of the performers on stage resulting in something that
resembles a huge mass dance revolt). They have even gone as far as to make para para lesson
videos for fans to learn all the moves by themselves. And to top it all off, Psycho le Cemu
produces excellent bouncy rock music (occasionally influenced with Asian beats) that possess
the power to become super addictive.
Psycho le Cemu consists of Daishi on vocals, Aya on guitar and dance, Lida on guitar, Yura-sama
on drums, backup vocals, and dance, and Seek on bass. However, the lineup doesn’t really
just stop there with their positions. Oftentimes, Psycho le Cemu releases songs with a
story or theme behind them. The story/theme will be represented in all the costumes,
promotional videos, performances, and photo shoots the band does for the single. In
every theme/story, Daishi is always the hero character, Aya the pretty girl, Lida the
fighter, Yura the handsome man/prince, and Seek is always the Random Thing. (and the
Random Thing can be anything from a dead person to a fish-like creature) One can always
see that these guys put a lot of effort into their costume designs too. They’re all
utterly unique and one-of-a-kind. (especially Seek’s costumes!)
You’d think Psycho le Cemu gets most of their attention from their wild image. Amazingly,
these guys, I inform you, write good and addictive music as well as look unique. All their
songs have a bouncy rock element to them, and they never fail to lift my mood a few notches
when I hear one. Some repeating patterns I’ve observed in Psycho’s music are: 1. Oriental
flavor – some pieces have a detectable Oriental sound to them. 2. Darkness and Distortion –
in darker pieces, Daishi’s voice will get distorted up a bit. 3. Addictive and Bouncy –
Always, there will be some part of the song that is addictive, if not necessarily bouncy.
Lida writes most of the lyrics and music for the group, and his lyrics aren’t all that bad.
They’re perfect for the happy bouncy image Psycho has.
After a about three years on an independent label, Psycho le Cemu was picked up by one
of the major labels, Nippon Crown. Their first full-length major label album, FRONTIERS,
was released in August 2003. They are currently going strong and have been releasing
singles every few months. In June 2004, Psycho attended and performed at Pacific Media
Expo in California. Following their successful performance at PMX, they gave another
exciting one at A-Kon in Texas. This just proves that Psycho does have what it takes
to go international!
